An idea can begin with something small: a choice you keep noticing, a familiar place that feels different each day, or a question you want to spend more time with. What holds your attention is a useful place to start.
Latent Hacks is developing a global touring exhibition of youth-created interactive AI art. The question at its heart, “Who Am I?”, leaves room for each creator to explore what matters to them. You choose the form your work needs.
Notice what makes you curious
Try describing one observation in an ordinary sentence. Give yourself something specific to think about. “I notice that the same thing means something different to different people” offers a starting point you can return to while making choices.
Then ask what you want to understand about it. Your question might change as the idea develops. Keeping a short note of those changes can help you see why one direction feels more interesting than another.
Choose a subject you feel comfortable exploring. Your own judgement about what belongs in a public work matters throughout the process.
Think about another person's experience
Imagine someone meeting your idea for the first time. What could they notice, choose or change? What might they understand differently afterwards?
These questions help connect your subject to an experience. If a choice matters to the work, consider why it matters. A small decision can carry meaning when it changes how someone understands a situation or their relationship to it.
You can explore that relationship in notes or a rough sketch. At this stage, the useful result is a clearer idea of what you want the work to do.
Give AI a purpose
AI can become part of how a work responds, changes or develops. Consider what you want that contribution to make possible, and which decisions you want to make yourself.
Return to your original question when choosing tools. Ask whether each choice helps the experience you are trying to create. Your interests and your judgement give those choices direction.
Keep a next step in view
A useful next step could be to write one sentence about your question and another about the experience you imagine. Keep them for yourself and revisit them as your thinking changes.
